CU-Lock Haven athletic training student completes full immersion experience at Milton Hershey School

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (07/22/2025) — This spring, second-year athletic training Commonwealth University-Lock Haven graduate student, Ghana Cornelius, gained knowledge about the profession of athletic training as well as learned the skills needed to succeed in the field through a full immersion experience at Milton Hershey School (MHS).

Cornelius, of Harrisburg, completed three clinical rotations where she was able to practice and enhance the skills that she was taught in the classroom under other certified athletic trainers. In her last semester, she completed a full immersion experience under the supervision of Elizabeth Lohman, LAT, ATC, who has been the athletic trainer at MHS for 18 years.

During her experience, Cornelius was able to gain hands-on experience in the clinic setting in the morning and then switch to after school athletic training.

"Ghana was a great asset to us at MHS," Lohman said. "She is very knowledgeable, related well to the student-athletes and was a hard worker."

Cornelius began her full immersion with the boys and girls basketball teams, wrestling and the co-ed ice hockey team. She had the responsibilities of evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation for the after school athletes and helped the physical therapist with rehabilitation exercises in the morning.

Cornelius was given the opportunity to travel with the boys' basketball team to Pittsburgh to play Montour High School for the first round of states. With the conclusion of the winter season, she transitioned to treating athletes for track and field, baseball and softball.

Throughout the seasons, Cornelius was exposed to injuries from head to toe. "One of the neat experiences that I was exposed to was having a couple of athletes dislocate their patella, where for one of them, the other athletic trainer at MHS, Alyson Golden, had to attempt to put it back in place, which she did successfully."

Cornelius learned about different types of tape - like elastikon and kinesiology - and using different taping methods. She has also learned how the athletic training electronic health system works to document the student-athletes' injuries.

"I have wanted to work in the clinic and then the high school setting and with this clinical experience, I have been given the opportunity to do so," Cornelius said. "This experience was definitely different than a traditional high school setting but I am glad I was able to see what other kinds of experiences there are out there."

"I will utilize everything that I have learned not only in the classroom but from all of my clinical rotations into my clinical practice," she added. "I cannot wait to spread some new ideas into the world of athletic training."
