Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra to Perform 'Valentines' Show at CU-Bloomsburg
Bloomsburg, PA (01/09/2024) — The Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra will perform a "Valentines Event" concert at Commonwealth University-Bloomsburg on Friday, Feb. 16, at 7:30 p.m. in Haas Center for the Arts, Mitrani Hall.
The performance, part of the Arts in Bloom series, will feature a program of Beethoven's "Coriolan Overture," Fifth Piano Concerto, and Eighth Symphony. Tickets are $20 for the public and $15 for senior citizens and children under age 17. Information and tickets are available at www.bloomu.edu/arts-in-bloom.
The orchestra was founded in Bulgaria in 1892 as the Guards Symphony Orchestra. In 1938, the orchestra combined with the Academic Symphony Orchestra and transformed into the Royal Military Symphony Orchestra. Since 1945, it has been known as the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra and the national orchestra of Bulgaria.
Directed by maestro Nayden Todorov, the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra was awarded many prestigious accolades, including: "Musician of the Year," "Golden Lyre," "Golden Stave," "Golden Quill," "Crystal Lyre," the Honorary Sign of Sofia, the Honorary Sign of the President of Bulgaria. The featured soloist will be pianist Ivaylo Vassilev.

International Guitar Night - Friday, March 1, at 7:30 p.m. Carver Hall, K.S. Gross Auditorium. The performance will feature Luca Stricagnoli (Italy), the amazing acoustic rock interpreter; Le Thu Le (Vietnam), whose nylon string artistry stretches from classical to contemporary; Marco Pereira (Brazil), the master composer and performer; Minnie Marks (Australia), the irrepressible blues slide guitarist and singer.
Rubberband: Trenzado - Saturday, March 23, at 7:30 p.m. Haas Center for the Arts, Mitrani Hall. In Trenzado, Victor Quijada, a Canadian choreographer who is also an American citizen of Mexican heritage, revisits nostalgia to push his creative language further. Built upon the themes of roots, boundaries, homeland, and loss, the piece explores our physical and emotional limits when we face removal from home, lost connections, and reconstruction. It also addresses the hopes that come with starting new.
iLuminate - Sunday, April 14, at 7:30 p.m. Haas Center for the Arts, Mitrani Hall. iLuminate has been a household name since they were called "The Best New Act in America!" during a run on America's Got Talent in 2011. iLuminate is a company based on the fusion of technology and dance.
