Osgood's major gift pushes Lock Haven wrestling's 'The Rise' campaign past $3.5M goal 2 years early
Commonwealth University president's $50,000 gift reinforces commitment to the legacy, student-athletes and future of Mat-Town USA
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (10/09/2026) — The future of Lock Haven wrestling is rising, fueled by a powerful legacy, the unwavering support of its alumni and fans, and a renewed commitment to the student-athletes who will carry that tradition forward.
On Oct. 9, Lock Haven University Foundation (LHUF) announced a $50,000 gift from Commonwealth University President Jeff Osgood to The Rise, the campaign for Lock Haven wrestling, helping push the fundraising initiative beyond its $3.5 million goal two years ahead of its original 2028 target.
Osgood's commitment to men's and women's wrestling, represents an investment in the continued success of two programs that embody the grit, determination and competitive spirit synonymous with Lock Haven wrestling, also known as Mat-Town USA.
Launched in 2024, The Rise aimed to build upon Lock Haven wrestling's storied history while securing the resources necessary to compete at the highest levels of collegiate wrestling. Prior to Osgood's gift, the campaign had generated just under $3.5 million from hundreds of supporters. His commitment reinforces a clear message about the value of Lock Haven wrestling and its place in the future of the university.
"Wrestling is an extraordinary part of Lock Haven's identity, with a legacy built by generations of student-athletes, coaches and alumni who have represented The Haven with pride," Osgood said. "I believe in the power of athletics to shape lives, strengthen our university community and create opportunities that extend far beyond competition. This commitment reflects my confidence in Lock Haven wrestling and my desire to help ensure future generations of Bald Eagles have the resources and support they need to thrive."
The Rise was built around three key priorities: securing the resources needed to compete today and establishing a stronger financial foundation for tomorrow, while paying homage to Mat-Town USA's historic past. Funds generated through the campaign support immediate-use dollars to strengthen recruiting and roster depth, alongside endowment growth that provides sustained scholarship support for future generations of Bald Eagle wrestlers.
For men's wrestling, the investment helps advance the program's pursuit of the maximum 9.9 NCAA Division I equivalencies while strengthening its ability to attract and retain outstanding student-athletes. For women's wrestling, the campaign builds upon Lock Haven's longstanding connection to the sport and its early commitment to collegiate women's wrestling, supporting the program's continued rise toward national championship contention.
The impact also extends beyond the mat. Competitive wrestling programs help attract talented students to Lock Haven, enrich the student experience, build alumni engagement and strengthen the university's reputation. Scholarship support and enhanced recruiting resources can help student-athletes pursue a transformative education while developing the discipline, resilience and leadership skills that serve them throughout their lives.
For head men's wrestling coach Scott Moore and the generations of wrestlers who have represented Lock Haven, that investment is essential to preserving the program's identity while creating opportunities for its next generation.
"Lock Haven wrestling has always been about more than wins and championships. It's about the people, the work ethic and the pride that connect generations of Bald Eagles," Moore said. "The Rise gives us an opportunity to honor that tradition while building the resources we need to compete, recruit and develop student-athletes at the highest level. Support like President Osgood's commitment help move that vision forward."
A sentiment echoed by head women's wrestling coach, Matt Lackey.
"We're incredibly grateful to have a university leader who recognizes the value of wrestling and the opportunities it creates for our student-athletes," Lackey said. "In the short time since [Jeff] became president, his commitment to championing athletics and supporting both our women's and men's wrestling programs has been truly inspiring. His support means a great deal to our student-athletes, and this gift further demonstrates his commitment to strengthening the future of Lock Haven wrestling."
Lock Haven's wrestling tradition includes 47 All-Americans, 9 NCAA champions and more than 750 victories in men's wrestling. Its history is carried forward by generations of standout competitors and coaches, while the women's program builds upon a pioneering tradition and continues to establish itself among the nation's top collegiate programs.
Osgood's commitment reinforces a shared responsibility among university leadership, coaches, alumni and supporters: to celebrate that history, invest in today's student-athletes and ensure the legacy of Mat-Town USA continues to thrive.
"President Osgood's visionary leadership and generous financial investment reflect a tremendous belief in Lock Haven wrestling and the impact this program has on our student-athletes and university community," said Ashley Koser, LHUF executive director. "We are equally grateful to The Rise Wrestling Campaign Steering Committee for the countless hours, thoughtful guidance and dedicated leadership they have invested in this effort. Their passion for Lock Haven wrestling and their commitment to securing its future have been instrumental in moving this campaign forward."
"Together, Jeff, the committee and countless alumni and friends who have supported The Rise campaign are helping ensure that the legacy of Mat-Town USA continues to inspire and create opportunities for generations," she added. "Although The Rise has surpassed its original fundraising goal, the campaign remains open to additional support that can further strengthen immediate-use resources, expand scholarship opportunities and build the long-term financial foundation necessary to sustain excellence in both our men's and women's wrestling programs."
