National History Day contest to be held at CU-Lock Haven

LOCK HAVEN, PA (03/04/2024) — Commonwealth University-Lock Haven to host the National History Day (NHD) contest for Region 5 on Friday, March 22, for students in grades six through 12. The contest will occur largely in the Durrwachter Alumni Conference Center.

Region 5 National History Day is part of the National History Day (NHD) program for middle and high school students and is a yearlong academic program proven to enhance student achievement and college and career readiness. The internationally recognized program has received the National Humanities Medal from President Obama and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The NHD theme for this year is "Turning Points in History." Throughout the year, students research and analyze the topic and develop projects based on the theme in one of five categories: video documentaries, exhibits, historical papers, dramatic performances and websites. At the regional contest, students present their research to teams of judges.

The winners of the regional contest will compete at the State History Day event at the University of Scranton from April 21-22.

The public is invited to view the competition, which is free. Check-in for participants will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the Durrwachter Alumni Conference Center, judging will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The awards ceremony will be held in Price Auditorium at 3 p.m.

The National History Day contest is co-sponsored by Central Intermediate Unit #10 and CU-Lock Haven. State History Day is sponsored by the Army Heritage and Education Center in Carlisle.

The snow make-up date for NHD is Friday, April 5.
