National History Day contest brings 58 local students to CU-Lock Haven

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (04/14/2025) — Commonwealth University-Lock Haven hosted the National History Day (NHD) contest for Region 5 last month, for students in grades six through 12 in the Parsons Union Building. Fifty-eight students participated in this year's contest from 11 middle and high schools from the following school districts: Bald Eagle Area, Keystone Central, Midd-West, State College Area, Penns Valley Area, Selinsgrove Area, Williamsport Area and Line Mountain.

The NHD theme for this year was "Rights and Responsibilities in History." Throughout the year, students research and analyze the topic and develop projects based on the theme in one of five categories: video documentaries, exhibits, historical papers, dramatic performances and websites. At the regional contest, students presented their research to teams of judges.

"The event is beneficial for middle and high school students because they get a taste of what studying history is really like," said Dr. Rick Goulet, associate professor of history at CU-Lock Haven and site coordinator for the Region 5 NHD contest. "The students do considerable research to try to understand the multiple perspectives of historical questions or topics they choose, which is essential to understanding the past. It is also a great opportunity for our campus to showcase our facilities to prospective CU-Lock Haven students and give these young scholars exposure to our faculty and students who volunteer as judges."

Region 5 National History Day is part of the National History Day program for middle and high school students and is a yearlong academic program proven to enhance student achievement and college and career readiness. The internationally recognized program has received the National Humanities Medal from President Obama and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The 18 individual and group winners of the regional contest had the opportunity to compete at the State History Day event at the University of Scranton from April 12-13.

The National History Day contest is co-sponsored by Central Intermediate Unit (CIU) #10 and CU-Lock Haven. National History Day in Pennsylvania is sponsored by the University of Scranton.
