MEDIA ADVISORY: Wounded Ukrainian Soldier to speak at CU-Lock Haven Oct. 3, benefit planned for Oct. 2
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (09/08/2025) — Commonwealth University-Lock Haven will host a severely wounded Ukrainian soldier in collaboration with Revived Soldiers Ukraine from Philadelphia on Friday, Oct. 3, from 10-11:30 a.m. in Greenberg Auditorium - Room 105, Willis Health Professions Building. The event will also be carried via Zoom on the Bloomsburg and Mansfield campuses.
The presentation by Sgt. Davyd, a fluent English speaker, will focus on his rehabilitation and prosthetic devices along with experiences as a soldier in the Ukraine. He will be accompanied by his wife and two volunteers associated with the non-profit charity.
The event was planned by Dr. Rick Schulze, retired professor in the Department of Biological and Health Sciences and a former Fulbright Lecturer in public health at Lugansk State Medical University in Ukraine. The talk, which is open to the public, will assist students, faculty, staff and the community in understanding the impact of war on families and soldiers, as well as help them gain a deeper understanding of serving veterans with severe injuries.
According to Dr. Schulze, U.S. officials estimate over 100,000 service-members have been killed on each side in Ukraine. Ukraine hospitals are dealing with constant attacks, and their economy is severely affected by the war. The U.S. has state-of-the art prosthetics, equipment and expertise to assist the military with serving amputees after its wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Revised Soldiers Ukraine (RSU) is one charity bringing those wounded to the U.S. for their medical care.
"CU-Lock Haven has many students studying health care-related fields such as physician assistant, physical therapy, nursing, athletic training, rehabilitation and public health as well as social studies and history, so it makes a great deal of sense for our campus to be exposed first-hand to the experiences of service-members who have suffered horrific injuries. This is a fantastic learning opportunity for all of us," Schulze said.
A benefit for RSU will be held on Thursday, Oct. 2, at the Sons of Italy patio, 1 N. Henderson Street, Lock Haven, from 6-10 p.m., featuring a chicken barbeque dinner, Private Stock Trio in concert from 7-9 p.m. and Sgt. Davyd, his wife and the volunteers will be in attendance.
