Lock Haven athletic training student completes internship at the University of Miami

Lock Haven, PA (07/20/2023) — This spring, Gabrielle DeBolt, of York, completed in a full-immersion athletic training internship at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. DeBolt graduated in May with a master's degree in athletic training, a bachelor's in health science and a minor in psychology.

During her time as an undergraduate student, she participated in cross country, track and field and was a cadet in Lock Haven's Army ROTC Bald Eagle Battalion.

During her internship with the University of Miami, DeBolt covered track and field and helped with their spring Football team. Her supervisors were Vinny Scavo, head athletic trainer and assistant athletic director, and Meghan Cartafalsa, head athletic trainer for Miami's track and field team.

The University of Miami is a Division I athletics, "Power 5" school. There, DeBolt had the opportunity to work with professional track and field athletes and a professional Jai Alai athlete.

"It was an amazing experience," DeBolt said. "I enjoyed working with all the athletic trainers, physical therapists and physicians at the university, and I learned a lot from them during my time there."

As a student intern, DeBolt was able to finetune her clinical skills as an athletic trainer and learn new rehabilitation techniques and modalities.

"The modalities at the University of Miami are very different from anything I have used before," DeBolt said. "They have a lot of resources available for the athletes, which was really cool to see and learn about. Learning new sport-specific rehabilitation exercises for track and field was eye opening."

Working with the University of Miami track and field team allowed DeBolt to expand her passion for the sport she participated in at Lock Haven.

DeBolt's career plans include working in the collegiate setting for a track and field and cross-country team in southern Pennsylvania or Maryland. She also has aspirations to create a non-profit rehabilitation service for wounded soldiers and veterans that will encompass athletic training, physical therapy and occupational therapy.
