Kelly Henning to Headline CU-Bloomsburg Annual Health Sciences Symposium

Bloomsburg, PA (04/17/2024) — Dr. Kelly J. Henning, an epidemiologist, medical doctor, and public health program lead at Bloomberg Philanthropies, will be the principal speaker at Commonwealth University-Bloomsburg's 32th Annual Health Sciences Symposium on Thursday and Friday, April 25 and 26.

Henning's keynote address, "What's Killing Us: How Do We Know and How Do We Respond?" will focus on the astonishing lack of information globally on the reasons people die - among the estimated 60 million deaths around the world in 2023, less than half have a recorded cause of death. This leads to a major disconnect between what people die from and how prevention, treatment, and resources are allocated. Henning will review the opportunities for improvement and discuss major national and local successes and the resulting improvements in health that result from improvements in the collection, analysis, and translation of health data into action.

Henning has led Bloomberg Philanthropies' public health program since it began in 2007. She was the first person to serve as director of epidemiology for the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

The keynote address will be given on Thursday, April 25, at 5 p.m. in Carver Hall, K.S. Gross Auditorium. Henning will also share more on her experiences and career in public health on Friday, April 26, at 9 a.m. in Kehr Union Ballroom 1.

As part of the Health Sciences Symposium, the 36th Annual Wellness Fair will be held Friday, April 26, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Kehr Union Multipurpose Rooms.

The events are sponsored by Commonwealth University's College of Health Professions, College of Science and Technology, and the Community Giving Foundation.
