CU-Lock Haven students receive Presidential Volunteer Service Award

LOCK HAVEN, PA (12/21/2023) — Three Commonwealth University-Lock Haven students have received the Presidential Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) for the 2022-2023 school year.

The PVSA recognizes students who complete 100 or more volunteer service hours over a 12-month period. Lock Haven students who received the award were Pollyana Canete, health sciences/physician assistant major from Lebanon, Pennsylvania; Alexis Mayes, heath sciences major from Coalport; and Emma Stellfox, psychology major from Enola.

The students received hours for helping with projects like the annual Hunger Bowl, helping the Mill Hall Lions, working at the Lock Haven Shoe Bank and Roads to Peace and a number of other volunteer activities.

"The PVSA is a great way for students to give back to the community and learn valuable leadership skills to become more marketable in their field," said Chrissy Wise, assistant director of community service. "To an employer, those additional hours served may set their application apart from the numerous other candidates that applied for a job at their company. I encourage students to volunteer as a way to connect to the community and give back, but also as a way to develop stronger professional skills."

The students were presented with a medallion and a certificate signed by President Bashar Hanna during the fall 2023 semester for their efforts.
