CU-Lock Haven student experiences cutting-edge athletic training treatments during clinical rotation at Clemson University

by Taylor Terwilliger

LOCK HAVEN, PA (07/17/2024) — During her final semester in the athletic training master program at Commonwealth University-Lock Haven this spring, Taylor Terwilliger completed a full-immersive clinical rotation at Clemson University in South Carolina.

During her clinical experience, Terwilliger, of Addison, New York, worked with the NCAA Division I Clemson 2023 ACC championship baseball team. Among the staff members she worked with was Terwilliger's clinical preceptor and supervisor at Clemson, Kimberly Hill, MS, AT, ATC, SCAT, C-PS, assisting with rehabilitation, treatment planning/care, emergency care, medical documentation through their database and practice and game coverage. Terwilliger was exposed to many cutting-edge treatment methods, one of which included PRP treatment, or Platelet-Rich Plasma Injections. This treatment uses a patient's own blood cells to accelerate healing in a specific area.

Terwilliger also completed an Orthopedic Physician Extender certification (OPE-C) for her capstone project. With this certification, she gained the knowledge and skills in competency areas within orthopedic practice including evidenced-based reasoning in the assessment and management for specific musculoskeletal injury/pathology, appropriate fracture immobilization and identifying the fundamental goals relative to patient care/safety, understanding of musculoskeletal imaging and intervention strategies/techniques in orthopedic practice, surgical considerations in clinical practice and knowledge of orthopedic healthcare management and leadership practices.

During her time at Clemson, Terwilliger accumulated over 1,000 hours of clinical experience, furthering her skills in all domains of athletic training.

"I could not have asked for a better experience than at Clemson and with Kim," Terwilliger said. "I have learned so much, met new people and really enjoyed my time. I'm so thankful for this opportunity that both Lock Haven and Clemson have provided for me."
