CU-Lock Haven sophomore receives William I. Vance Memorial Scholarship

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (02/28/2025) — Fredrick Grove, a sophomore environmental geoscience major at Commonwealth University-Lock Haven, is a recipient of The William I. Vance Memorial Scholarship for the 2024-'25 academic year.

The Vance Memorial Scholarship assists exemplary CU-Lock Haven students seeking a STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) career, with preference given to first-generation students majoring in computer science or any of the natural sciences. Grove lauds the award for the ways in which it is helping him pursue his academic and professional aspirations without the added stress of financial burden.

Originally from Howard, Grove was drawn to Lock Haven by its close-knit campus community and easy access to the great outdoors. Its location, nestled between mountains and rivers, made it the perfect place for him to study environmental sciences while staying close to home and work.

"My future career path is still up in the air," Grove said. "I'm looking at options like becoming a game warden, a water quality specialist or even a park ranger. No matter what, I know I want to be outside and make a difference."

In addition to pursuing his academic interests, Grove is developing close connections with the teachers at Lock Haven, who have influenced his educational journey, including Dr. Loretta Dickson, professor of geology.

"She (Dickson) knows what I'm capable of and challenges me; she also keeps class fun and always makes sure students truly understand the material," Grove said. "Her motivating advice and encouragement have definitely inspired me to succeed."

Not only has Grove benefited from Lock Haven's academics and supportive faculty but also gained a strong work ethic and leadership abilities, which are traits instilled in him by his family.

"You earn what you work for," Grove said. "That's something my parents always taught me, and I apply that mindset to everything I do."

Grove's scholarship support has significantly improved his Haven experience as it has allowed him to concentrate on his studies without having to worry about the burden of student loans. At first, he was concerned about being able to afford tuition and other costs associated with his education, but he was determined to pay for college out of pocket. The Vance Memorial Scholarship has made achieving that goal much easier.

"Lock Haven is a place where you can grow, learn and be part of a supportive community and the professors at CU genuinely care about your success," Grove said.
