CU-Lock Haven freshman follows family footsteps and enlists in U.S. Army
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (10/29/2026) — For Commonwealth University-Lock Haven freshman Kaelynn Braun, joining the U.S. Army is a chance to follow in her parents' footsteps and fulfil a goal she's carried with her for years.
Braun, a Lock Haven native and exploratory studies student, recently took her enlistment oath surrounded by her family, mentor and friends.
Both of Braun's parents served in the military, inspiring her own desire to serve from an early age. "I was inspired to join because both of my parents served, and it has always been something I have wanted to do," Braun said. "I want to help and serve the people of the United States."
Braun will continue that family tradition as she begins her Army career in military police, the same career field both of her parents pursued during their service.
For Braun, serving means helping others.
"Serving in the military means fighting for and serving the people of the United States because everyone matters and deserves to be fought for, no matter what," she said.
Braun said she is especially looking forward to basic training and the opportunity to challenge herself physically and mentally.
"I'm excited to experience basic and tackle all of the challenges that get thrown my way," she said. "There are definitely some things that will challenge me, but I know I will be able to get through it."
For other students considering military service, Braun's advice is simple.
"Just do it," she said. "You never know if something is for you until you try. Live your life in the moment, and don't live with the regret of not doing something because you were scared or nervous."
For Braun, taking the oath marks the beginning of a path rooted in service, family and a willingness to take on what comes next.
