CU-Lock Haven athletic training student completes clinical immersion at Saint Francis University
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (10/01/2026) — Tyler Jannone, of Canton, completed a full-semester clinical immersion at Saint Francis University (SFU) as part of the Commonwealth University-Lock Haven Master of Science in Athletic Training program, under Kosie Shephard-Porada, head athletic trainer and Taylor Johns, a former Lock Haven alum.
Jannone was primarily responsible for the health of the men's basketball and track and field teams, but also worked with football and women's soccer.
Having grown up in rural Pennsylvania, Jannone was no stranger to small-town Loretto, the home of the Red Flash. He began his experience as the men's basketball team was beginning their conference (North Eastern) schedule.
His responsibilities consisted of maintaining the health of the athletes, acting as an "assistant athletic trainer" to Taylor Johns. During his time with the basketball team, he treated and managed acute and overuse injuries, developed a comprehensive rehabilitation program, and experienced NCAA Division 1 home and away environments.
"I had an amazing time with the basketball team," he said. "Taylor was a great preceptor who allowed me to work at my own pace and learned everything I could for every situation. The team itself was amazing. Great people, great values and always a fun time when traveling. I am thankful for the experience."
After the basketball season concluded, Jannone was right back in action with other SFU teams.
He was able to manage more overuse injuries that occurred with the track team and also assist with spring football workouts.
"Ever yday was busy. Between football workouts and managing the track athletes, every day I was flying around," Jannone said about his schedule during the track season.
Jannone enjoyed working with Shephard-Porada in an effort to help athletes maintain their high level of activity despite long, extended seasons.
"Kosie is so knowledgeable as an athletic trainer," Jannone said. "She has taught me many skills when specifically dealing with chronic injuries and she brings a family aspect into the athletic training room. What more can you ask for from a preceptor? I am thankful that I was able to have the outdoor track season with her."
Along with his time at SFU, Jannone also completed a certification to be a strength coach through the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA). He plans to use this as a complement to his athletic training degree and implement some of the material into his rehabilitation protocols.
Jannone has passed the Board of Certification Exam (BOC) and, in part because of this experience, is now employed by St. Francis as one of their staff athletic trainers.
"I am super excited to be out on my own," Jannone said. "This is what these five years have prepared me for and I am forever grateful for those I have met along my path."
