Commonwealth University Ranks Among the 2026 Most Affordable Adult-Gerontology NP Programs in the State
PA (03/25/2026) — Commonwealth University has been ranked No. 8 among the 2026 Most Affordable Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner (AGNP) programs in Pennsylvania, reinforcing its commitment to preparing highly skilled healthcare professionals, while keeping education accessible and affordable.
The recognition, from HealthcareDegree.com, comes at a critical time, as the United States experiences a significant demographic shift. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the population age 65 and older has grown, while the population under age 18 has declined. This shift is driving a rise in chronic illnesses and other health conditions, creating increased demand for specialized primary care providers.
Adult-gerontology nurse practitioners are trained to assess, diagnose and manage both chronic and acute conditions. Working collaboratively with other healthcare professionals, AGNPs play a critical role in improving care quality, advancing wellness initiatives and advocating for older adults in a variety of healthcare settings.
"Commonwealth University's nurse practitioner program is distinguished by the exemplary board-certification success achieved by its students, a testament to the strength of our curriculum, the dedication of our faculty, and the determination of our students," said Jennifer Sheaffer, CU chairperson of graduate nursing and coordinator of NP programs,
Breiner School of Nursing.
The career outlook for nurse practitioners continues to be strong. As the healthcare landscape evolves, advanced education is becoming increasingly important. Nurse practitioners must earn at least a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) to practice. Commonwealth University's ranking underscores its dedication to meeting workforce demands, while providing students with a high-quality, affordable pathway into a profession in healthcare.
