Commonwealth University-Mansfield Welcomes Two New Music Faculty Members

MANSFIELD, Pa. - (09/19/2025) — Commonwealth University-Mansfield has announced the addition of two distinguished music educators, Dr. Roy McLerran as director of bands and Dr. Patrick Tatman as director of choral activities, to the Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance, beginning in the fall 2025 semester.

McLerran, an accomplished conductor and music educator, holds degrees from the University of Miami and Stephen F. Austin State University. He brings more than a decade of experience as a teacher, conductor, and clinician at the secondary and collegiate levels. He has conducted ensembles across the United States and internationally in Austria and Germany and has presented at the Florida Music Educators Association Convention and the Frost Music Education Department Forum at the University of Miami.

A 2024 National Finalist for the American Prize in Conducting, College and University Division, McLerran also serves as Artistic Director of the East Texas Chamber Winds, a professional wind chamber ensemble and nonprofit he founded in 2016. Under his leadership, the ensemble has been featured at the Texas Music Educators Association Convention and commissioned new works by leading composers. His professional affiliations include the College Band Directors National Association, Texas Music Educators Association, and Florida Music Educators Association, among others.

Tatman, a western Pennsylvania native, joins Mansfield as Director of Choral Activities. He is a conductor and music educator with extensive experience leading choirs and serving as a clinician both nationally and abroad. Tatman has taught in public schools in Utah, Colorado, and Pennsylvania, and brings a passion for choral music and arts advocacy to the department.

Tatman holds music education degrees from Penn State University and Brigham Young University, along with a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Utah. He is also a certified vocologist through the National Center for Voice and Speech. His research focuses on the acoustical influences of vocal technique in choral tone production, and he emphasizes the role of choral music in inspiring communities and advancing the arts.
