Commonwealth University Launches MSN Informatics Program

PA (08/07/2023) — Commonwealth University (CU) has launched a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Informatics degree program that will prepare nurses for leadership and educational roles.

"Nursing informatics is a growing field as a specialty in advanced nursing practice," said Lori Metzger, associate professor of nursing and director of the MSN Informatics program. "Informatics allows nurses to expand their professional career in the areas of quality improvement, improvement science, data analytics, healthcare informatics and informational technology."

The entirely online MSN Informatics program consists of 21 credits of nursing courses and 18 credits of concentration in information technology management and analytics. All of Commonwealth University's nursing programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

"As we continue to develop technology in healthcare, the field of informatics will only continue to grow and the demand for nurses in this specialty will also increase," Metzger said. "Nurses rely on information technology each and every day in nursing practice, at the bedside, in the clinic and home health settings. Electronic health records from those interactions have supplied us with valuable information that allow us to improve healthcare for the patient and the provider. We need nurses who understand that care and can now do the analytics to contribute to improvement in nursing care for patients."
