Commonwealth University launches medical assistant and phlebotomy training in Mansfield for fall 2026
MANSFIELD, Pa. (05/26/2026) — Commonwealth University Workforce Development will expand healthcare career training to the Mansfield campus beginning fall 2026, offering new clinical medical assistant (CMA) and phlebotomy technician (CPT) programs to residents of Tioga County and the surrounding region.
The programs are designed to address regional healthcare workforce shortages while creating accessible, short-term pathways into high-demand medical careers.
The CMA program prepares students for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) national certification exam. The phlebotomy technician program prepares students for the NHA Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam. Both certifications are nationally recognized and valued by healthcare employers.
CU Workforce Development has already demonstrated strong outcomes with employer-sponsored cohorts. Most recently, Laurel Highlands Medical Center sponsored two employee cohorts through the CMA program, with 100% of participants earning their NHA CCMA certification.
"These programs provide residents with an opportunity to enter the healthcare field quickly while building long-term career pathways," said Angie Hardy, director of workforce development. "We are excited to bring this training to Mansfield and support both individuals and employers across Tioga County."
Graduates of the CMA program are prepared for roles such as:
- clinical medical assistant
- physician practice assistant
- outpatient care technician
- medical office assistant
Phlebotomy graduates may pursue positions including:
- phlebotomist
- laboratory assistant
- patient service technician
Commonwealth University plans to pursue inclusion of these programs on Pennsylvania's High Priority Occupation (HPO) list, which would allow eligible participants to access Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) funding to help cover tuition costs.
In addition to enrolling students, CU Workforce Development is also seeking qualified healthcare professionals in the Mansfield area to serve as instructors for both programs.
