Lock Haven athletic training student gains first-hand experience during internship with Coastal Carolina University
Lock Haven, PA (07/26/2023) — After graduating from Lock Haven in May 2021, with a bachelor's degree in exercise science, Karly Trillhaase, of Eatontown, New Jersey, decided to stay at The Haven to pursue a master's degree in athletic training.
During her final semester at Commonwealth University-Lock Haven, Trillhaase completed a full-immersion internship at Coastal Carolina University (CCU), an NCAA Division I school in Conway, South Carolina, under the supervision of certified athletic trainer, Barry Lippman.
Trillhaase's primary assignment at CCU was with the men's soccer team and she also had the opportunity to work with the baseball and football teams. She assisted the soccer team with the evaluation of musculoskeletal injuries and general medical conditions, daily treatment sessions, rehabilitation sessions with injured athletes and medical care of practices and competitions.
The remainder of her hours were spent assisting spring football and baseball practices and competitions. She gained more hands-on experience working with upper extremity injuries, while working with these teams.
Throughout her internship, Trillhaase was able to obtain a variety of clinical experiences at the Division I level, while working with a variety of new athletes.
"My time at CCU was a great experience. One of the things I liked the most about my internship was the variety of athletes and sports teams I was able to work with," Trillhaase said. "I enjoyed the relationships I was able to develop with all of the athletes and athletic trainers at CCU. I worked with and learned from a variety of athletic trainers who have taught me valuable lessons and new skills I can take with me into my future career."
