Commonwealth University launches new online workforce training programs in AI and human resources

PA (04/20/2026) — Commonwealth University is expanding access to career-focused training with the launch of two new fully online, asynchronous programs designed to help working professionals upskill and advance in high-demand fields. Developed by faculty experts in partnership with Zeigler Consulting Services and the Office of Workforce Development, these programs provide flexible, industry-aligned learning opportunities that meet the needs of today's workforce.

The newly launched programs include:
Making Sense of AI and Its Real-World Impact
Developed by Dr. Karl Kapp, professor in business, innovation and technology, this course offers a structured introduction to artificial intelligence, helping participants understand both foundational concepts and real-world applications. Learners explore key topics such as AI terminology, ethical and legal considerations and the growing role of AI in decision-making across industries. The course also emphasizes practical skills, including prompt writing and effective use of AI tools, while addressing emerging risks such as misinformation, bias and deep fakes. Participants leave with the knowledge needed to confidently and responsibly integrate AI into their professional work.

SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP Certification Exam Preparation
Developed by Dr. Wai Kwan "Elaine" Lau, management professor, this fully online course prepares participants for the nationally recognized SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP certification exams. Through 10 interactive modules aligned with SHRM's Body of Applied Skills and Knowledge (BASK), learners strengthen their understanding of key HR competencies and technical knowledge areas. The course includes applied scenarios, practice questions and test-taking strategies designed to build confidence and readiness. Earning a SHRM certification positions professionals as trusted HR practitioners and enhances career advancement opportunities in human resources.

"These programs reflect our commitment to providing flexible, high-quality training that aligns with employer needs and supports career growth," said Angie Hardy, Office of Workforce Development at Commonwealth University.
