Commonwealth University prepares students for their professional path at Career Intensive Bootcamp

Commonwealth University students participated in an intense professional development program at the Bloomsburg and Mansfield campuses from March 6-8. The Career Intensive Boot Camp (CIBC) is designed to make students confident professionals before they leave campus. Students spend the weekend practicing their professional communication and networking, learning how to leverage their transferrable skillset and interact with alumni in their chosen industry. Sessions included topics such as personal finance, workplace ethics, entrepreneurship and dining etiquette. Students also had the opportunity to have their resume and cover letter reviewed and participate in networking practice sessions and mock interviews.

New class of scholars inducted into Frederick Douglass Institute for Academic Excellence

More than 50 students from various majors, as well as graduate studies, were inducted as student scholars into Commonwealth University-Bloomsburg's Frederick Douglass Institute for Academic Excellence (FDIAE). FDIAE is part of the PASSHE collaborative established to enhance the academic life of participating universities and to enrich their campus climate. It enables all members of the university community to identify with a man whose life and work embody American democratic ideals and educational excellence. The institute develops and implements collaborative and interdisciplinary teaching projects that enrich our general education and enhance the quality of our culturally diverse courses.

The Dean's List, prepared at the end of each semester, recognizes those students who have achieved academic distinction. To qualify for the Dean's List, the student must have earned a GPA of at least 3.50, on a 4.0 scale, in 12 or more semester hours of letter grades.

Commonwealth University-Mansfield voice students win awards at regional competition

Voice students from Commonwealth University-Mansfield recently won recognition at the Allegheny Mountain Chapter (AMC) National Association of Teachers of Singing Student Auditions, held in November at Gettysburg College. The auditions included around 120 entries from around Pennsylvania. Both of the voice faculty at Mansfield, Dr. Todd Ranney and Dr. Alissa Rose, had student winners at the competitions, where students competed against peers of a similar age and experience level. The top three winners in each category were featured in a final concert at the end of the auditions and additional students were recognized as semi-finalists. All students received comment sheets from the judges, who are voice teachers and NATS members. These auditions provide an opportunity for the students to receive feedback on their singing, hear other students from the region and be exposed to a wide variety of repertoire.

Commonwealth University-Mansfield voice students win recognition at singing auditions, competition

Voice students from Commonwealth University-Mansfield recently won recognition at the Allegheny Mountain Chapter (AMC) National Association of Teachers of Singing Student Auditions, held Nov. 16 at Penn State University. There were approximately 100 audition entries from around Pennsylvania.

CU-Mansfield Celebrates New Educators During Teacher Induction Ceremony

In May, Commonwealth University-Mansfield celebrated student teachers during the Induction to the Teaching Profession Ceremony held in North Dining Room in Manser Hall. After successfully completing their placements, the student teachers were honored during the program designed to celebrate the hard work, dedication and commitment of prospective teachers.

Commonwealth University-Lock Haven Psychology Department Holds Psi Chi Induction Ceremony

The Psychology Department at CU-Lock Haven recently held its Psi Chi Induction ceremony. The following majors and minors were inducted: Johna Rebuck, of Shamokin; Alexis Mayes, of Coalport; Rose Jeffes, of Hatboro; Daytona Yarnell, of Blanchard; Kaitlyn McGonigal, of Clearfield; Katrina Naclerio, of Milford; Emma Dickey, of Cogan Station; and Makenna Koyack, of Palmyra. Awards were also presented during the spring event: Clarissa Davis, of Bensalem - Newcomer Award Katrina Naclerio, of Milford - Newcomer Award Daytona Yarnell, of Blanchard - Achievement Award Eve Ryan, of Pottsville - Achievement Award Jordan Phillips, of Trout Run - Achievement Award Alexa Lloyd, of State College - Student of the Year Emma Stellfox, of Enola - Student of the Year Psi Chi inductees for fall 2024 included Samantha Beickel, of Lock Haven; Briana Catanzaro, of Dunmore; Gwendalyn Marquardt, of Lock Haven; Mason Novobilski, of Lewisburg; Jordan Phillips, of Trout Run; and Terrence Soler, of Carlisle.

CU-Bloomsburg students attend FBLA National Conference

CU-Bloomsburg recently attended the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Collegiate National Leadership Conference in Dallas, Texas. These students qualified for the NLC after placing in the top four of their respective categories at the Pennsylvania FBLA Collegiate State Leadership Conference in April. CU-Bloomsburg's chapter earned the title "Distinguished Chapter" at this year's NLC. The accolade reflects the effort and hard work put into fundraising, events, membership, collaboration and leadership throughout the year.

Commonwealth University Students Participate in Model EU Simulation

Several Commonwealth University student delegations from the Bloomsburg and Mansfield campuses participated in the annual University of Pittsburgh Model European Union simulation hosted by Susquehanna University this spring. The students passed several resolutions pertaining to the war in Ukraine and sustainable agriculture.

Commonwealth University education majors get sneak peek into teaching and classroom management through Williamsport partnership

More than 30 education majors from Commonwealth University's Bloomsburg, Lock Haven and Mansfield locations recently got an inside look at each level of public education thanks to a collaborative project with the Williamsport Area School District. The district-wide Field Day experience was made possible by to a $9,000 Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) mini grant awarded to Dr. Priya Poehner, professor of education at CU-Lock Haven, and Dr. Daniel Roesch, associate professor of teaching and learning at CU-Bloomsburg, to promote "Sweetening the Teaching Experience" and to focus on building partnerships with area schools.

CU-Lock Haven Students Meet with State Rep. Ismail Smith-Wade-El

Students with the Commonwealth University-Lock Haven Gender and Sexuality Alliance Club and the Black Student Union met with State Rep. Ismail "Izzy" Smith-Wade-El (D-Lancaster) at the PA State Capitol Building on Monday, April 29. Students learned about internships and public affairs issues. Rep. Smith-Wade-El identifies as queer and is an advocate for public higher education, racial equity and LGBTQ concerns. The visit was coordinated by Dr. Rick Schulze, chairperson, CU-Lock Haven Commission on LGBTQ Affairs; Patricia Hunter, MA, LPC, counselor; and the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

Commonwealth University students return to Jamaica to provide service to the community of Harmons

A team of Commonwealth University students recently returned to the small community of Harmons, Jamaica, along with faculty members, Jennifer Bell, physician assistant studies and Amy Way, health and exercise science. The 18 undergraduate and five physician assistant graduate students represented the Lock Haven, Bloomsburg and Clearfield campuses. This is the seventh service-learning program to Jamaica for Lock Haven students led by Bell and Way and the second for Commonwealth University.

Commonwealth University students travel to Belize to research politics, culture, economy

Fourteen Commonwealth University students, from the Mansfield and Lock Haven campuses, recently returned from studying abroad in the Central American country of Belize. The students were part of a faculty-led, short-term study abroad program that has been introducing students to Belize since 2014.
