Commonwealth University President Bashar W. Hanna to Step Down; Accepts Statewide Leadership Role

PA (04/29/2025) — Commonwealth University President Dr. Bashar W. Hanna announced today that he will step down from his position effective July 31, 2025, to assume a new leadership role as vice chancellor for strategic initiatives for Pennsylvania's State System of Higher Education (PASSHE).

In his message to the Commonwealth University community, Hanna expressed profound gratitude for the opportunity to serve as CU's first president and shared his excitement about continuing to support public higher education across Pennsylvania.

"This new opportunity is both humbling and exciting-a chance to bring the lessons we've learned together at Bloomsburg, Lock Haven and Mansfield to a broader stage," Hanna said. "It's an opportunity to help shape the future of higher education across the Commonwealth, advancing innovation, sustainability, and above all, student success."

PASSHE Chancellor Chris Fiorentino commented on President Hanna's new role: "We are fortunate to bring into the system office someone with decades of experience at the university level as we work to open new doors of opportunity for students across Pennsylvania. Dr. Hanna will be a great addition to the team."

During his tenure, Hanna led the integration of three universities into Commonwealth University, making CU the most affordable State System institution, improving graduation rates, narrowing equity gaps and securing record-breaking philanthropic support. Under his leadership, the Bloomsburg University Foundation's endowment nearly doubled to $90 million, the Mansfield University Mountaineer Foundation was launched, and the university achieved a major milestone by raising $88 million toward its ongoing multi-year $100 million comprehensive campaign goal.

Council of Trustees Chair John Wetzel praised Hanna's leadership and lasting contributions to the university.

"The Council of Trustees would like to thank Dr. Hanna for his dedication and commitment to our students and their success," said John Wetzel, chair of the Commonwealth University Council of Trustees. "Shortly after taking the helm at Bloomsburg, Dr. Hanna was informed that three universities would be merged into one - a challenge that he took on with distinction. I'd point specifically to his focus on first-generation students, those students who are Pell eligible and underrepresented minority students. We saw both expanded access and improved retention - a critical strength we must continue. He also moved the university closer to the business community by focusing on workforce alignment. We wish him luck in his new position and look forward to his continued partnership as we continue to make Commonwealth University the regionally relevant academy Pennsylvania needs."

Reflecting on the journey, Hanna emphasized the resilience and dedication of CU's students, faculty and staff.

"Serving as your president has been the greatest honor of my professional life," Hanna said. "Together, we have laid a strong foundation for Commonwealth University's future, and I look forward to seeing CU continue to thrive."

Hanna will officially begin his new role with PASSHE on Aug. 1, 2025.
