Commonwealth University criminal justice faculty present research at conference
PA (07/24/2026) — Commonwealth University criminal justice faculty recently shared their scholarship and expertise at the Northeastern Association of Criminal Justice Sciences (NEACJS) Conference, held in June in Dewey Beach, Delaware.
Representing all three CU campuses, Drs. Justin Crowl (Mansfield), Katie Ely (Lock Haven) and Ali Ozdogan (Bloomsburg) presented research and participated in scholarly discussions focused on contemporary issues in criminal justice and higher education.
Ely participated in a roundtable discussion titled "Beyond the Classroom: Experiential Learning Across Modalities in Criminal Justice Education." The session explored innovative approaches to experiential learning in criminal justice education. Ely discussed the opportunities and challenges associated with providing meaningful experiential learning experiences across Commonwealth University's multiple campuses and instructional modalities.
Ozdogan presented "The Politicization of Intelligence in Turkey: Historical-Institutional Continuities from the Late Ottoman Empire to the Modern Republic" as part of the Global Views on Justice panel. His presentation examined the historical development of intelligence institutions in Turkey and explored how patterns of politicization have influenced institutional growth and broader political outcomes.
Crowl delivered two presentations during the conference. His first presentation, "Artificial Intelligence in Criminal Justice Education: Navigating Student Learning, Innovation and Workforce Readiness in a Post-Merger University," examined the opportunities and challenges associated with integrating artificial intelligence into criminal justice education. Crowl's second presentation, "Social Media, Crime and College Students: Exploring Online Behavior of Criminal Justice Majors," explored how criminal justice students present themselves on social media. The study explored themes related to digital literacy and professional workforce expectations.
